ARCACHON , a See also:

coast See also:town of See also:south-western See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Gironde, 37 in. W.S.W. of See also:Bordeaux on the See also:Southern railway. Pop. (1906) 9006. Arcachon is situated on the southern border of the See also:lagoon of Arcachon at the See also:foot of See also:dunes covered with splendid See also:pine-See also:woods. It comprises two distinct parts, the summer town, extending for 22 M. along the See also:shore, and bordered by a See also:firm sandy See also:beach, frequented by bathers, and the See also:winter town, farther inland, consisting of numerous villas scattered amongst the pines. Owing to the mildness of its See also:climate the winter town is a resort for consumptive patients. The See also:principal See also:industries are See also:oyster-breeding, which is conducted on a very large See also:scale, and fishing. The See also:port has See also:trade with See also:Spain and See also:England.
