DUNKIRK DUNES, See also:BATTLE OF, was fought near Dunkirk on the 24th of May (3rd of See also:June) '658, between the See also:French and See also:English See also:army under the command of See also:Marshal See also:Turenne and the See also:Spanish army under See also:Don Juan of See also:Austria and the See also:prince of See also:Conde. The severest See also:part of the fighting was See also:borne by the English contingents on either See also:side. Six thousand English See also:infantry under See also:General See also:Lockhart were sent by See also:Cromwell to join the army of Turenne, and several Royalist See also:corps under the command of the See also:duke of See also:York (afterwards See also:James II.) served in the Spanish forces. The See also:object of the Spaniards was to relieve Dunkirk, which Turenne was besieging, and the See also:complete victory of the French and English caused the speedy surrender of the fortress.
