ARDROSSAN , a seaport, See also:

burgh of See also:barony, and See also:police burgh of See also:Ayrshire, See also:Scotland, 32 M. from See also:Glasgow by the Glasgow & See also:South-Western railway, and 291 M. by the See also:Lanarkshire & Ayrshire See also:branch of the Caledonian railway. Pop. (1901) 6079. The rise of Ardrossan was due to the enterprise of See also:Hugh, 12th See also:earl of See also:Eglinton, who began the construction of the See also:present See also:town and See also:harbour in 18o6. The harbour was intended to be in connexion with a See also:canal from Glasgow to Ardrossan, but this was only completed as far as See also:Johnstone. Owing to the costliness of the undertaking, and the See also:death of the earl in 1819, the See also:works were suspended after an outlay of £1oo,000, but his successor completed the See also:scheme on a reduced See also:scale at an expense of another £1oo,000. The See also:dock See also:accommodation has since been consider-ably extended, and the town enjoys See also:great prosperity. Steamers run every See also:week-See also:day to See also:Arran and See also:Belfast, and during summer there is a service also to See also:Douglas in the Isle of See also:Man. The exports consist principally of See also:coal and See also:iron from collieries and iron-works in the neighbourhood; and the imports of See also:timber, ores and See also:general goods. See also:Shipbuilding thrives and the See also:fisheries are important. The town is governed by a See also:provost and See also:council.
