ARNSBERG , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Westphalia, romantically situated on an See also:eminence almost surrounded by the See also:river See also:Ruhr, 44 M. S.E. of See also:Minster and 58 m. E.N.E. of Disseldorf by See also:rail. Pop. (moo) 849o. It is the seat of the provincial authorities, and has three churches, a See also:court of See also:appeal, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic gymnasium, which was formerly the See also:Benedictine See also:abbey of Weddinghausen, a library, a normal school and a chamber of See also:commerce. See also:Weaving, See also:brewing and distilling are carried on, and there are manufactories of See also:white See also:lead, shot and See also:paper, See also:works for the See also:production of railway plant, and saw-See also:mills. Near the town are the ruins of the See also:castle of the See also:counts of Arnsberg, the last of whom, Gottfried, sold his See also:count-See also:ship, in 1368, to the See also:archbishop of See also:Cologne. The countship was incorporated by the archbishops in their duchy of Westphalia, which in 1802 was assigned to See also:Hesse-See also:Darmstadt and in x815 to See also:Prussia. The town, which had received its first See also:charter in 1237 and later joined the Hanseatic See also:League, became the See also:capital of the duchy.
