ARNSTADT , a See also:

town in the principality of Schwarzburg-See also:Sondershausen, See also:Germany, on the See also:river See also:Gera, 11 m. S. of See also:Erfurt, with which it is connected by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 14,413. There are five churches, four See also:Protestant and one See also:Catholic. The Evangelical Liebfrauenkirche, a Romanesque See also:building (mainly 12th-See also:century), has two octagonal towers and a xoth-century See also:porch. The See also:palace contains collections of pictures and See also:porcelain, and attached to it is a magnificent See also:tower, all that remains of the See also:castle built in 156o. The town See also:hall See also:dates from 156x. The See also:industries of Arnstadt include See also:iron and other See also:metal See also:founding, the manufacture of See also:leather, See also:cloth, See also:tobacco, weighing-See also:machines, See also:paper, playing-See also:cards, chairs, gloves, shoes, iron See also:safes, and See also:beer, and See also:market-gardening and See also:trade in See also:grain and See also:wood are carried on. There are See also:copper-mines in the neighbourhood, as well as tepid saline springs, the See also:waters of which are used for bathing, and are much frequented in summer. Arnstadt dates back to the 8th century. It was bought in 1306 by the See also:counts of Schwarzburg, who lived here till 1716.
