ARONA , a See also:

town of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Novara, on the W. See also:bank of See also:Lake See also:Maggiore, 3 M. from its S. extremity, 23 M. N. of Novara, and 42 M. N.W. of See also:Milan by See also:rail. Pop. (1901) 4700. It is a railway centre of some importance on the II. 2ISimplon See also:line, and is also the See also:southern See also:terminus of the steamers which ply on Lake Maggiore. The See also:church of S. Maria contains a See also:fine See also:altar-piece by Gaudenzio See also:Ferrari. On a See also:hill to the See also:north of the town stands a See also:colossal See also:bronze statue of S. Carlo See also:Borromeo (See also:born here in 1538), erected in 1697. The See also:pedestal, of red See also:granite, is 42 ft. high, and the statue 70 ft. high; the latter is hollow, and can be ascended from within.
