AVEIRO , a seaport, episcopal see, and the See also:capital of an administrative See also:district, formerly included in the See also:province of See also:Beira, See also:Portugal; on the See also:river Vouga, and the See also:Lisbon-See also:Oporto railway. Pop. (1900) 9979• Aveiro is built on the See also:southern See also:shore of a marshy See also:lagoon, containing many small islands, and measuring about 15 M. from See also:north to See also:south, with an See also:average breadth of about r m. The See also:Barra Nova, an artificial See also:canal about 33 ft. deep, was constructed between 1801 and 1808, and gives See also:access to the See also:Atlantic ocean. The See also:local See also:industries include the preparation of See also:sea-See also:salt, the catching and curing of See also:fish, especially sardines and oysters, and the gathering of aquatic See also:plants (make). There is also a brisk See also:trade in See also:wine, oil and See also:fruit; while the Aveiro district contains See also:copper and See also:lead mines, besides much See also:good pasture-See also:land. Aveiro is probably the See also:Roman Talabriga. In the 16th See also:century it was the birthplace of Joao Affonso, one of the first navigators to visit the fishing-grounds of See also:Newfoundland; and it soon became famous for its See also:fleet of more than sixty vessels, which sailed yearly to that See also:country, and returned laden with dried codfish. During the same century the See also:cathedral was built, and the See also:city was made a duchy. The See also:title " See also:duke of Aveiro "became See also:extinct when its last holder, Dom Jose Mascarenhas e See also:Lancaster, was burned alive for high See also:treason, in 1759. The administrative district of Aveiro coincides with the north-western See also:part of the province of Beira; pop. (1900) 303,169; See also:area, ro65 sq. m.
