BACUP , a See also:

market See also:town and municipal See also:borough in the Rossendale See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Lancashire, See also:England, on the See also:river Irwell, 203 M. N.N.W. from See also:London, and 22 N. by E. from See also:Manchester, on the Lancashire & See also:Yorkshire railway. Pop. (1901) 22,505. It is finely situated in a narrow valley, surrounded by See also:wild, high-Iying moorland. It is wholly of See also:modern growth, and contains several handsome churches and other buildings, while among institutions the See also:chief is the See also:mechanics' See also:institute and library. The recreation grounds presented in 1893 by Mr. J. H. Maden, M.P., are beautifully laid out. See also:Cotton See also:spinning and See also:power-See also:loom See also:weaving are the chief of numerous manufacturing See also:industries, and there are large collieries in the vicinity. The principle of co-operation is strongly See also:developed, and a large and handsome See also:store contains among other departments a See also:free library for members.

The borough was incorporated in 1882, and the See also:

corporation consists of a See also:mayor, 6 aldermen and 17 councillors. • See also:Area, 612o acres, In 1841 .the See also:population of the chapelry was only 1526. One of the hills in the vicinity is fortified with a See also:great See also:ancient earthwork and ditch.
