Its length is 48 m., See also:average breadth 3z to 41 m., greatest breadth 72 m., least breadth a little less than i m. It covers 266 sq. m. and has an extreme See also:depth of 149 ft. Its See also:northern shores are bordered by the beautiful basaltic cones of the Bakony mountains, the volcanic See also:soil of which produces grapes yielding excellent See also:wine; the See also:southern consist partly of a marshy See also:plain, partly of See also:downs. The most beautiful point of the lake is that where the See also:peninsula of Tihany projects in the See also:waters. An See also:ancient See also:church of the See also:Benedictines is here situated on the See also:top of a See also:hill. In a See also:tomb therein is buried See also:Andrew I. (d. Io6r), a See also:king of the Hungarian Arpadian See also:dynasty. The temperature of the lake varies greatly, in a manner resembling that of the See also:sea, and many connect its origin with a sea of the See also:Miocene See also:period, the waters of which are said to have covered the Hungarian plain. About fifty streams flow into the lake, which drains into the See also:Danube and is well stocked with See also:fish. It often freezes in See also:winter.

Lake Balaton is of growing importance as a bathing resort.
