BARBERTON , a See also:

town of the See also:Transvaal, 283 M. by See also:rail (175 m. in a See also:direct See also:line) E. of See also:Pretoria and 136 m. W.N.W. of Delagoa See also:Bay. Pop. (1904) 2433, of whom 1214 were whites. Barberton lies 2825 ft. above the See also:sea and is built on the See also:side of a valley named De Kaap, from a bold headland of the See also:Drakensberg which towers above it. The See also:chief town of a See also:district of the same name, it owes its existence to the See also:discovery of See also:gold in the Kaap valley, and See also:dates from 1886. There are several See also:fine public buildings grouped mainly See also:round See also:President Square. The town is connected with the Lourenco Marques-Pretoria See also:trunk railway by a See also:branch line, 35 M. See also:long,- which runs N.E. through fine mountainous See also:country and joins the See also:main line at Kaapmuiden. During the See also:war of 1899–1902 the Boers were driven out of Barberton (13th of See also:September 1900) by See also:General (afterwards See also:Sir See also:John) See also:French.
