BARENTS, WILLEM (d. 1597) , Dutch navigator, was See also:born about the See also:middle of the 16th See also:century. In 1594 he See also:left See also:Amsterdam with two See also:ships to See also:search for a See also:north-See also:east passage to eastern See also:Asia. He reached the See also:west See also:coast of Novaya Zemlya, and followed it northward, being finally forced to turn back when near its See also:northern extremity. In the following See also:year he commanded another expedition of seven ships, which made for the strait between the See also:Asiatic coast and See also:Vaygach See also:Island, but was too See also:late to find open See also:water;° while his third See also:journey equally failed of its See also:object and resulted in his See also:death. On this occasion he had two ships, and on the outward journey sighted See also:Bear Island and See also:Spitsbergen, where the ships separated. Barents' See also:vessel, after rounding the north of Novaya Zemlya, was beset by See also:ice and he was compelled to See also:winter in the north; and as his See also:ship was not released See also:early in 1597, his party left her in two open boats on the 13th of See also:June and most of its members escaped. Barents himself, however, died on the 3oth of June 1599. In 1871 the See also:house in which he wintered was discovered, with many See also:relics, which are preserved at the See also:Hague, and in 1875 See also:part of his See also:journal was found.
