The town lies north of the See also:Drakensberg on the Kraai tributary of the See also:Orange See also:river at an See also:elevation of 5831 ft. The district has an See also:area of 1564 sq. m. and a See also:population (1904) of 849o, of whom 50% are whites. The See also:chief occupation followed is See also:sheep-farming, the pasturage being excellent. Like Barkly See also:West, the town and district are named after See also:Sir See also:Henry Barkly, See also:governor of Cape See also:Colony, 1870-1877.
