BARTAN , more correctly BARTIN, a See also:

town in the vilayet of See also:Kastamuni, See also:Asiatic See also:Turkey, retaining the name of the See also:ancient See also:village Parthenia and situated near the mouth of the Bartan-su (anc. See also:Parthenius), which formed See also:part of the boundary between See also:Bithynia and See also:Paphlagonia. Various aetiological explanations of the name Parthenius were given by the ancients, e.g. that the See also:maiden See also:Artemis hunted on its See also:banks, or that the flow of its See also:waters was See also:gentle and maiden-like. The town, which is the See also:residence of a kaimakam, is built on two See also:low See also:limestone hills and its streets are paved with limestone blocks. It is noted for the See also:fine. See also:box-See also:wood grown in the vicinity, is a See also:port of See also:call for See also:Black See also:Sea See also:coasting steamers and carries on a considerable See also:trade with See also:Constantinople which might be increased were it not for the obstruction of the See also:harbour by a See also:bar.
