He studied first under the marine painter R. Hardorff in Hamburg, then under C. See also:Schweitzer in See also:Dusseldorf and C. Oesterley in Hamburg, and finally at the See also:Berlin School of See also:Art. After travelling extensively, especially in See also:Italy, he settled in See also:Munich in 1885 and was appointed See also:professor of See also:painting in 1891. An oil painter of See also:great See also:power, he is one of the leading German See also:water-See also:colour painters, mainly of See also:marines and scenes of fishing See also:life, painted with See also:rude vigour and a great display of technical skill. He excels in See also:storm scenes and in depicting the strong, healthy fishing-folk of the See also:northern coasts. He became an honorary member of leading See also:English, German, Dutch, Belgian and See also:Austrian art See also:societies.
