It is situated on the south See also:bank of the See also:Macquarie See also:river, at an See also:elevation of 2153 ft., in a fertile undulating See also:plain on the See also:west See also:side of the See also:Blue Mountains. Bathurst has broad streets, See also:crossing one another at right angles, with a handsome See also:park in the centre of the See also:town, while many of the public buildings, specially the town See also:hall, See also:government buildings, and See also:Anglican and See also:Roman See also:Catholic cathedrals, are notenorthy. Bathurst is the centre of the See also:chief See also:wheat-growing See also:district of New South :Wales, while See also:gold, See also:copper and See also:silver are extensively See also:mined in its vicinity. There are railway See also:works, See also:coach factories, tanneries, breweries, See also:flour-See also:mills and manufactures of boots and shoes and other commodities. The town was founded in 1815 by See also:Governor Macquarie, taking its name from the 3rd See also:Earl Bathurst, then secretary of See also:state for the colonies, and it has been a See also:municipality since 1862.
