BELLEY , a See also:

town of eastern See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Ain, 52 M. S.E. of Bourg by the See also:Paris-See also:Lyon railway. Pop. (1906), town, 3709; See also:commune, 5707. It is situated on See also:vine-covered hills at the southernextremity of the See also:Jura, 3 M. from the right See also:bank of the See also:Rhone. Apart from the See also:cathedral of St See also:Jean, which, with the exception of the See also:choir of 1413, is a See also:modern See also:building, there is little of architectural See also:interest in the town. Belley is the seat of a bishopric and a See also:prefect, and has a tribunal of first instance. The manufacture of See also:morocco See also:leather goods and the See also:quarrying of the lithographic See also:stone of the vicinity are carried on, and there is See also:trade in See also:cattle, See also:grain, See also:wine, truffles and dressed pork. Belley is of See also:Roman origin, and in the 5th See also:century became an episcopal see. It was the capital of the See also:province of Bugey, which was a dependency of See also:Savoy till 16or, when it was ceded to France. In 1385 the town was almost entirely destroyed by an See also:act of See also:incendiarism, but was subsequently rebuilt by the See also:dukes of Savoy, who surrounded it with ramparts of which little is See also:left.
