BOONE , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of Boone county, See also:Iowa, U.S.A., a See also:short distance from the See also:Des Moines See also:river and near the centre of the See also:state. Pop. (189o) 6520; (1900) 888o; (1905, state See also:census) 9500 (1334 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 10,347. It is served by the See also:Chicago & See also:North-Western (which has construction and repair shops here), the Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & St See also:Paul See also:railways, and by the Fort See also:Dodge, Des Moines & See also:Southern (inter-See also:urban) railway, which connects with Des Moines, See also:Ames, &c. Boone is an important See also:coal centre; bricks and tiles are manufactured from the See also:clay obtained near by; there is a packing plant for the manufacture of See also:beef and pork products; and from the See also:rich farming See also:section by which the city is surrounded come large quantities of See also:grain, some of which is milled here, and live-stock. Boone was laid out in 1865, was incorporated as a See also:town in 1866, and was chartered as a city in 1868.
