SAN DONNINO , a See also:town and episcopal see of See also:Emilia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Parma, 14 M. N.W. by See also:rail from the town of Parma. Pop. (1901) town, 6251; See also:commune, 12,109. It occupies the site of the See also:ancient Fidentia, on the Via Aemilia; no doubt, as its name shows, of See also:Roman origin. Here M. See also:Lucullus defeated the democrats under See also:Carbo in 82 B.c. It was See also:independent under See also:Vespasian, but seems soon to have become a See also:village dependent on Parma. Its presdnt name comes from the martyrdom of S. Domninus under Maximian in A.D. 304. The See also:cathedral, erected in See also:honour of this See also:saint, is one of the finest and best-preserved See also:Lombardo-Romanesque churches of the 11th–13th centuries in See also:north Italy.

part of the See also:facade is incomplete, but the See also:lower, with its three portals and sculptures, is very See also:fine; the interior is See also:simple and well-proportioned, and has not been spoilt by restorations. For the benitier, a See also:work of the See also:early 11th See also:century, see Rdssegna d'Arte, 1905, 180. Not far from the town is the small See also:church of S. See also:Antonio del Viennese, a 13th-century structure in See also:brick (ib., 1906, 22). The Palazzo Comunale, in the See also:Gothic-Lombard See also:style, is a work of the 14th century. Borgo S.
