Botoshani is commercially important as the See also:town through which goods from See also:Poland and See also:Galicia pass in transit for the See also:south; being situated on a See also:branch railway between See also:Dorohoi and on the See also:main See also:line from See also:Czernowitz to See also:Galatz. It has extensive See also:starch and See also:flour See also:mills; and Botoshani flour is highly prized in Rumania, besides being largely exported to See also:Turkey and the See also:United See also:Kingdom. Botoshani owes its name to a Tatar See also:chief, Batus or See also:Batu See also:Khan, See also:grandson of Jenghiz Khan, who occupied the See also:country in the 13th See also:century. There are large colonies of Armenians and See also:Jews. BO-See also:TREE, or BODHI-TREE, the name given by the Buddhists of See also:India and See also:Ceylon to the Pipul or sacred See also:wild fig (Ficus religiosa). It is regarded as sacred, and one at least is planted near each See also:temple. These are traditionally supposed to be derived from the See also:original one, the Bodhi-tree of Buddhist See also:annals, beneath which the See also:Buddha is traditionally supposed to have attained perfect knowledge. The Bo-tree at the ruined See also:city of See also:Anuradhapura, 8o m. north of See also:Kandy, grown from a branch of the See also:parent-tree sent to Ceylon from India by See also:King See also:Asoka in the 3rd century B.c., is said to have been planted in 288 B.c., and is to this See also:day worshipped by throngs of pilgrims who come See also:long distances to pray before it. Usually a bo-tree is planted on the See also:graves of the Kandy priests.
