BRACCIANO , a See also:town in the See also:province of See also:Rome, See also:Italy, 25 M. N.W. of Rome by See also:rail, situated on the S.W. See also:shore of the See also:Lake of Bracciano, 915 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 3987. It is chiefly remarkable for its See also:fine See also:castle (built by the See also:Orsini in 146o, and since 1696 the See also:property of the Odescalchi) which has pre-served its See also:medieval See also:character. The beautiful lake is the See also:ancient Lacus Sabatinus, supposed to derive its name from an See also:Etruscan See also:city of the name of Sabate, which is wrongly thought to be mentioned in the Itineraries; the reference is really to the lake itself, which See also:bore this name and gave it to one of the See also:Roman tribes, the tribes Sabatina, founded in 387 B.C. (O. Cuntz in Jahreshefte See also:des Osterr. See also:Arch. Instituts, ii., 1899, 85). It is 22 sq.m. in See also:area, 538 ft. above sea-level, and 530 ft. deep; it is almost circular, but is held to be, not an See also:extinct See also:crater, but the result of a volcanic subsidence. The tuf a deposits which radiate from it extend as far as Rome; various small craters surround it, while the existence of warm springs in the See also:district (especially those of Vicarello, probably the ancient See also:Aquae Apollinares) may also be noted. Many remains of ancient villas may be seen See also:round the lake: above its See also:west See also:bank is the station of See also:Forum Clodii, and on its See also:north shore the See also:village of Trevignano, which retains traces of the fortifications of an ancient town of unknown name. About See also:half-a-mile See also:east of it was a See also:post station called Ad Novas. The site of Anguillara, on the See also:south shore, was occupied by a Roman See also:villa. The See also:water of the lake partly supplies the Acqua Paola, a restoration by See also:Paul V. of the Aqua Traiana. (T.
