BUGIS , or BuG111s, a See also:people of Malayan stock, originally occupying only the See also:kingdom of See also:Boni in the See also:south-western See also:peninsula of the See also:island of See also:Celebes. From this See also:district they spread over the whole island, and founded settlements throughout the whole See also:Malay See also:Archipelago. They are of See also:middle See also:size and robust, of very active, enterprising nature and of a complexion slightly lighter than the See also:average Malay. In disposition they are brave, haughty and fierce, and are said to be more predisposed towards " See also:running See also:amuck " than any other Malayans. They speak a See also:language allied to that of the Macassars, and write it with similar characters. It has been studied, and its letters reproduced in type by Dr B. F. Mathes of the See also:Netherlands See also:Bible Society. The Bugis are industrious and ingenious; they practise See also:agriculture more than the neighbouring tribes, and manufacture See also:cotton-See also:cloth not only for their own use but for export. They also carry on a considerable See also:trade in the See also:mineral and See also:vegetable products of Boni, such as See also:gold-dust, See also:tortoise-See also:shell, pearls, See also:nut-megs and camphor. Their love of the See also:sea has given them almost a See also:monopoly of trade around Celebes. Their towns 760 are well built and they have See also:schools of their own.
