BURSCHEI4SCHAFT , an association of students at the See also:German See also:universities. It was formed as a result of the German See also:national sentiment awakened by the See also:War of Liberation, its See also:object being to See also:foster patriotism and See also:Christian conduct, as opposed to the particularism and See also:low moral See also:standard of the old Landsmannschaften. It originated at See also:Jena, under the patronage of the See also:grand-See also:duke of See also:Saxe-See also:Weimar, and rapidly spread, the Allgemeine deutsche Burschenschaft being established in 1818. The loud See also:political See also:idealism of the Burschen excited the fears of the reactionary See also:powers, which culminated after the See also:murder of See also:Kotzebue (q.v.) by Karl See also:Sand in 1819, a See also:crime inspired by a See also:secret society among the Burschen known as the Blacks (Schwarzen). The repressive policy embodied in the See also:Carlsbad Decrees (q.v.) was therefore directed mainly against the Burschenschaft, which none the less survived to take See also:part in the revolutions of 1830. After the emeute at See also:Frankfort in 1833, the association was again suppressed, but it lived on until, in 1848, all See also:laws against it were abrogated. The Burschenschaften are now purely social and non-political See also:societies. The Ref ormburschenschaften, formed since 1883 on the principle of excluding duelling, are See also:united in the Allgemeiner deutscher Burschenbund.
