On the removal of his parents to See also:Leipzig, he received his See also:early See also:education at the See also:Thomas school, and entered the university in 1847. Here he studied under See also:Moritz See also:Haupt and See also:Otto See also:Jahn until 1851, spent six months in See also:Berlin (chiefly to attend See also:Bockh's lectures), and completed his university studies at Leipzig (1852). The next three years were devoted to travel-See also:ling in See also:Belgium, See also:France, See also:Italy and See also:Greece. In 1856 he became a Privat-docent, and in 1858 extraordinary See also:professor at Leipzig; in 1861 professor of See also:philology and See also:archaeology at See also:Tubingen; in 1864 professor of classical antiquities at See also:Zurich; in 1869 at See also:Jena, where he was also director of the archaeological museum; in 1874 at See also:Munich, where he remained until his See also:death on the 21st of See also:September 1883. His most important See also:works are: Geographic von Griechenland (1862–1872); Beitrdge zur Geschichte der klassischen Studien See also:im Mittelalter (1873); Geschichte der klassischen Philologie in Deutschland (1883); See also:editions of See also:Julius See also:Firmicus Maternus' De Errore Profanarum Religionum (1856) and of See also:Seneca's Suasoriae (1857). The See also:article on See also:Greek See also:Art in See also:Ersch and See also:Gruber's See also:Encyclopaedia is by him. Probably the See also:work in connexion with which he is best known is the Jahresbericht uber See also:die Fortschritte der klassischen Altertumswissenschaft (1873, &c.), of which he was the founder and editor; from 1879 a Biographisches Jahrbuch See also:fur Altertumskunde was published by way of supplement, an obituary See also:notice of Bursian, with a See also:complete See also:list of his writings, being in the See also:volume for 1884.
