GRUBER, JOHANN GOTTFRIED (1774-1851) , See also:German critic and See also:literary historian, was See also:born at See also:Naumburg on the See also:Saale, on the 29th of See also:November 1774. He received his See also:education at the See also:town school of Naumburg and the university of See also:Leipzig, after which he resided successively at See also:Gottingen, Leipzig, See also:Jena and See also:Weimar, occupying himself partly in teaching and partly in various literary enterprises, and -njcying in Weimar the friend-See also:ship of See also:Herder, See also:Wieland and See also:Goethe. In 1811 he was appointed See also:professor at the university of See also:Wittenberg, and after the See also:division of See also:Saxony he was sent by the See also:senate to See also:Berlin to negotiate the See also:union of the university of Wittenberg with that of See also:Halle. After the union was effected he became in 1815 professor of See also:philosophy at Halle. He was associated with Johann See also:Samuel See also:Ersch in the editorship of the See also:great See also:work Allgemeine Encyklopadie der Wissenschaften and Kiinsle; and after the See also:death of Ersch he continued the first See also:section from vol. xviii. to vol. liv. He also succeeded Ersch in the editorship of the Allgemeine Literaturzeitung. He died on the 7th of See also:August 1851. Gruber was the author of a large number of See also:works, the See also:principal of which are Charakteristik Herders (Leipzig, 1805), in See also:conjunction with Johann T. L. Danz (1769-1851), afterwards professor of See also:theology at Jena; Geschichte See also:des menschlichen Geschlechts (2 vols., Leipzig, 18o6) ; Worterb ch der altklassischen Mythologie (3 vols., Weimar, 1810-1815) ; Wielands Leben (2 parts, Weimar, 1815-1816), and Klopstocks Leben (Weimar, 1832). He also edited Wieland's Samtliche Werke (Leipzig, 1818-1828).
