river of See also:Germany, a tributary of the See also:Elbe, rises between See also:Bayreuth and See also:Hof in the N.E. of See also:Bavaria, springing outof the See also:Fichtelgebirge at an See also:altitude of 2390 ft. It pursues a winding course in a northerly direction, and after passing the manufacturing See also:town of Hof, flows amid well-wooded hills until it reaches the pleasant vale of Saalberg. Here it receives the See also:waters of the Schwarza, in whose romantic valley lies the See also:castle of Schwarzburg, the ancestral seat of the princes of the ruling See also:house of Schwarzburg-See also:Rudolstadt. From Saalberg the Saale enters the dreary See also:limestone formation of Thuringia, ,sweeps beneath the barren, conical hills lying opposite to the university town of See also:Jena, passes the pleasant watering-See also:place of See also:Kosen, washes numerous See also:vine-clad hills and, after receiving at See also:Naumburg the deep and navigable Unstrut, flows past See also:Weissenfels, See also:Merseburg, See also:Halle, See also:Bernburg and Kalbe, and joins the Elbe just above See also:Barby, after traversing a distance of 226 m. It is navigable from Naumburg, too m., with the help of sluices, and is connected with the See also:Elster near See also:Leipzig by a See also:canal. The See also:soil of the See also:lower See also:part of its valley is of exceptional fertility, and produces, amongst other crops, large supplies of See also:sugar beetroot. Among its affluents are the Elster, See also:Regnitz and Orla on the right See also:bank, and the Ilm, Unstrut, See also:Salza, Wipper and See also:Bode on the See also:left. Its upper course is rapid. Its valley, down to Merseburg, is picturesque, and even romantic, because of the many castles which See also:crown the enclosing heights. It is sometimes called the Thuringian or Saxon Saale, to distinguish it from another Saale (7o m. See also:long), a right-bank tributary of the See also:Main, in the Bavarian See also:district of Lower See also:Franconia. See See also:Hertzberg, See also:Die historische Bedeutung See also:des Saaletals (Halle, 1895).
