SAALFELD , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the duchy of See also:Saxe-See also:Meiningen, picturesquely situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Saale, 24 M. S. of See also:Weimar and 77 S.W. of See also:Leipzig by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 13,245. One of the most See also:ancient towns in Thuringia, Saalfeld, once the See also:capital of the See also:extinct duchy of Saxe-Saalfeld, is still partly surrounded by old walls and bastions, and contains some interesting See also:medieval buildings, among them being a See also:palace, built in 1679 on the site of the See also:Benedictine See also:abbey of St See also:Peter, which was destroyed during the Peasants' See also:War. Other notable edifices are the See also:Gothic See also:church of St See also:John, dating from the beginning of the 13th See also:century; the Gothic town See also:hall, completed in 1537; and, See also:standing on an See also:eminence above the See also:river, the Kitzerstein, a palace said to have been originally erected by the See also:German See also:king See also:Henry I., although the See also:present See also:building is not older than the 16th century. But perhaps the most interesting relic of the past in Saalfeld is the striking ruin of the Hoher Schwarm, called later the Sorbenburg, said to have been erected in the 7th century. Saalfeld is situated in one of the busiest parts of Meiningen and has a number of prosperous See also:industries, including the manufacture of machinery, bricks, See also:colours, See also:malt, cigars, See also:hosiery and See also:vinegar. Other industries are See also:brewing, See also:printing and See also:iron-See also:founding, and there are ochre and iron mines in the neighbourhood. Saalfeld See also:grew up around the abbey founded in 1075 by See also:Anno, See also:archbishop of See also:Cologne, and the palace built by the See also:emperor See also:Frederick I. In 1389 it was See also:purchased by the See also:landgrave of Thuringia, and with this See also:district it formed See also:part of See also:Saxony. In 168o it became the capital of a See also:separate duchy, but in 1699 it was See also:united with Saxe-See also:Coburg, passing to Saxe-Meiningen in 1826.
