The first See also:part of his See also:life was devoted to See also:mercantile and See also:financial pursuits at Cadiz and then in See also:Madrid, where he managed the affairs of and liquidated a mercantile and See also:industrial society to the See also:satisfaction and profit of the shareholders. In 1837 he became a See also:captain in the See also:national See also:militia, in 1852 Conservative See also:deputy in the See also:Cortes for See also:Alcoy, in 1853 secretary of See also:congress, and was afterwards elected ten times deputy, twice senator and life senator in 1877. Camacho took a prominent part in all financial debates and committees, was offered a seat in the Mon See also:cabinet of 1864, and was appointed under-secretary of See also:state finances in 1866 under Canovas and O'Donnell. After the revolution of 1868 he declined the See also:post of See also:minister of See also:finance offered by See also:Marshal Serrano, but served in that capacity in 1872 and 1874 in See also:Sagasta's cabinets. When the restoration took See also:place, Camacho sat in the Cortes among the dynastic Liberals with Sagasta as See also:leader, and became finance minister in 1881 at a See also:critical moment when See also:Spain had to convert, reduce, and consolidate her See also:treasury and other debts with a view to resuming See also:payment of coupons. Camacho See also:drew up an excellent See also:budget and collected See also:taxation with a decidedly unpopular vigour. A few years later Sagasta again made him finance minister under the regency of See also:Queen See also:Christina, but had to See also:sacrifice him when public See also:opinion very clearly pronounced against his too See also:radical financial reforms and his severity in collection of taxes. He was for the same reasons unsuccessful as a See also:governor of the See also:Tobacco See also:Monopoly See also:Company. He then seceded from the Liberals, and during the last years of his life he affected to See also:vote with the Conservatives, who made him governor of the See also:Bank of Spain.
