CANOSSA , a ruined See also:

castle, 1890 ft. above See also:sea-level, in See also:Emilia, See also:Italy, 12 m. S.W. of Reggio Emilia, commanding a See also:fine view of the See also:Apennines. It belonged to the countess See also:Matilda of See also:Tuscany (d. 1115), and is famous as the See also:scene of the See also:penance performed by the See also:emperor See also:Henry IV. before See also:Pope See also:Gregory VII. in 1077. The castle was destroyed by the inhabitants of Reggio in 1255.
