CASTLECONNELL , a See also:

village of Co. See also:Limerick, See also:Ireland, on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Shannon, 8 m. N.E. of Limerick on the See also:Great See also:Southern & Western railway. It possesses a See also:spa which was once considerably frequented, but is famous as a centre for the See also:salmon fishing on the See also:lower Shannon. Castleconnell is so intimately connected with this See also:sport that it has given its name to a favourite See also:pattern of See also:fly-See also:rod, in which a movable splice takes the See also:place of the usual See also:metal See also:joint. The beautiful rapids of Doonas (avoided by a See also:canal) are in the neighbourhood, and the surrounding scenery is generally attractive. There are remains of a See also:castle from which the See also:town took its name, which was the seat of the See also:kings of See also:Thomond, and was blown up by See also:General See also:Ginkel at the See also:time of the See also:siege of Limerick (169o).
