SPA , a See also:

town of See also:Belgium, lying less than 20 M. S.E. of See also:Liege and in the same See also:province, famous for its See also:mineral springs, which are reputed to be the See also:oldest known in See also:Europe, having been first discovered in 1326. They are supposed to have given the See also:common name of " spa " to such resorts. The town is situated 850 ft. above See also:sea-level and the heights above the valley reach 1Too ft. In the 18th See also:century it was the most fashionable resort in Europe for the medicinal use of such See also:waters, being visited by See also:Peter the See also:Great of See also:Russia, Gustavus III. of See also:Sweden, and See also:Joseph II. of See also:Austria. In 1807 much of the town was burned down, while the See also:principal buildings, the See also:Casino and the Pouhon, are quite See also:modern. Spa has not held its own with its many See also:French and See also:German rivals, but it still attracts about 20,000 visitors annually. Pop. (1904), 7759.
