CHAMPAIGNE, PHILIPPE DE (1602-1674) , Belgian painter of the See also:French school, was See also:born at See also:Brussels of a poor See also:family. He was a See also:pupil of J. Fouquieres; and, going to See also:Paris in 1621, was employed by N. Du Chesne to paint along with See also:Nicholas Poussin in the See also:palace of the Luxembourg. His best See also:works are to be found at See also:Vincennes, and in the See also:church of the See also:Carmelites at Paris, where is his celebrated Crucifix, a See also:signal See also:perspective success, on one of the vaultings. After the See also:death of Du Chesne, Philippe became first painter to the See also:queen of See also:France, and ultimately See also:rector of the See also:Academy of Paris. As his See also:age advanced and his See also:health failed, he retired to See also:Port Royal, where he had a daughter cloistered as a See also:nun, of whom (along with See also:Catherine See also:Agnes See also:Arnauld) he painted a celebrated picture, now in the Louvre, highly remark-able for its solid unaffected truth. This, indeed, is the See also:general See also:character of his See also:work,—grave reality, without See also:special See also:elevation or See also:depth of character, or See also:charm of warm or stately See also:colour. He produced an immense number of paintings, religious and other subjects as well as portraits, dispersed over various parts of France, and now over the galleries of See also:Europe. Philippe was a See also:good See also:man, indefatigable, See also:earnest and scrupulously religious. He died on the 12th of See also:August 1694.
