Louis XIV d'apres See also:les Memoires inedits d'See also:Olivier d'Ormesson and De Maria Stuarta et Henrico III. (1849), led him to the study of See also:general See also:history. The former was See also:expanded afterwards under the See also:title Histoire de l' administration monarchique en See also:France depuis l'avenement de Philippe-Auguste jusqu'd in mart de Louis XIV (1855), and in 1855 he also published his Dictionnaire historique See also:des institutions, wears et coutumes de in France, of which many See also:editions have appeared. These See also:works may still be consulted for the 17th See also:century, the See also:period upon which Cheruel concentrated all his scientific activity. He edited successively the See also:Journal d'Olivier Lefevre d'Ormesson (186o-1862), interesting for the history of the See also:parlement of See also:Paris during the minority of Louis XIV.; Lettres du See also:cardinal See also:Mazarin pendant son ministere (6 vols., 1870-1891), continued by the vicomte G. d'Avenel; and Memoires du duc de See also:Saint-See also:Simon, published for the first time according to the See also:original See also:MSS. (2 editions, 1856—1858 and 1878—1881). To Saint-Simon also he devoted two See also:critical studies, which are acute but not definitive: Saint-Simon considers comme histories de Louis XIV (1865) and See also:Notice sur la See also:vie et sur les memoires du duc de Saint-Simon (1876). The latter may be considered as an introduction to the famous Memoires. Among his later writings may be mentioned the Histoire de in France pendant in minorite de Louis XIV (4 vols., 188o) and Histoire de in France sous le ministere de Mazarin (3 vols., 1882—1883). These two works are valuable for abundance of facts, precision of details, and clear and intelligentarrangement, but are characterized by a slightly frigid See also:style. In their compilation Cheruel used a See also:fair number of unpublished documents. To the student of the second See also:half of the 17th century in France the works of Cheruel are a mine of See also:information. He died in Paris on the 1st of May 1891.
