CLARINA , a comparatively new See also:

instrument of the See also:wood-See also:wind class (although actually made of See also:metal), a hybrid possessing characteristics of both See also:oboe and See also:clarinet. The clarina was invented by W. Heckel of Biebrich-am-Rhein, and has been used since 1891 at the Festspielhaus, See also:Bayreuth, in See also:Tristan and Isolde, as a substitute for the See also:Holztrompete made according to See also:Wagner's instructions. The clarina has been found more See also:practical and more effective in producing the desired See also:tone-See also:colour. The clarina is a metal instrument with the conical See also:bore and fingering of the oboe and the clarinet single-See also:reed See also:mouthpiece. The See also:compass of the Notation. --to to Real sounds. r instrument is as shown, and it stands in the See also:key of Bb. Like the clarinet, the clarina is a transposing instrument, for which the See also:music must be written in a key a tone higher than that of the See also:composition. The timbre resulting from the See also:combination of conical bore and single-reed mouthpiece has in the lowest See also:register See also:affinities with the See also:cor anglais, in the See also:middle with the See also:saxophone, and in the highest with the clarinet. Other See also:German orchestras have followed the example of Bayreuth. The clarina has also been found very effective as a See also:solo instrument.
