CORINGA , a seaport of See also:

British See also:India, in the See also:district of See also:Godavari and See also:presidency of See also:Madras, on the See also:estuary of a See also:branch of the Godavari See also:river. The See also:harbour is protected from the swell of the See also:sea by the southward See also:projection of Point Godavari, and affords a shelter to vessels during the See also:south-See also:west See also:monsoon; but though formerly the most important on this See also:coast it has been silted up and lost its See also:trade. The repairing and See also:building of small See also:coasting See also:ships is an See also:industry at Tallarevu in the vicinity. In 1787 a See also:gale from the See also:north-See also:east occasioned an inundation which swept away he greater See also:part of Coringa with its inhabitants; and in 1832 another See also:storm desolated the See also:place, carrying vessels into the See also:fields and leaving them aground. Of Europeans the Dutch were the first to establish themselves at Coringa. In 1759 the See also:English took See also:possession of the See also:town, and erected a factory 5 M. to the south of it.
