CORSICANA , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Navarro county, See also:Texas, U.S.A., situated in the N.E. See also:part of the See also:state, about 55 M. S. of See also:Dallas. Pop. (189o) 6285; (1goo) 9313, of whom 2399 were of See also:negro descent; (1910 See also:census) 9749. It is served by the See also:Houston & Texas Central, the St See also:Louis See also:South Western, and the Trinity & Brazos Valley See also:railways. It is the centre of a large and productive See also:wheat- and See also:cotton-growing region, which has also numerous oil See also:wells (with a See also:total See also:production in 1907 of 226,311 barrels). The city has two oil refineries, a large cotton 1 See also:gin and a cotton compress, and among its manufactures are cotton-See also:seed oil, cotton-See also:cloth, See also:flour and See also:ice. The total value of the factory product in 1905 was $1,796,805, being an increase of 50'3% since 1900. Natural See also:gas is extensively used for See also:fuel and for See also:lighting. Corsicana is the seat of the Texas state See also:orphan See also:home and of an See also:Odd See also:Fellows widows' and orphans' home, and has a See also:Carnegie library. Corsicana was named in See also:honour of the wife of a Mexican, Navarro, who owned a large See also:tract of See also:land in the county and from whom the county was named. The first permanent See also:settlement here was made in 1848, and Corsicana was incorporated as a See also:village in 185o and chartered as a city in 1871.
