DEVA (mod. See also:Chester) , a See also:Roman legionary fortress in See also:Britain on the See also:Dee, It was occupied by Roman troops about A.D. 48 and held probably till the end of the Roman dominion. Its See also:garrison was the Legio XX. See also:Valeria Victrix, with which another See also:legion (II. Adjutrix) was associated for a few years, about A.D. 75-85. It never See also:developed, like many Roman legionary fortresses, into a See also:town, but remained military throughout. Parts of its See also:north and See also:east walls (from See also:Morgan's See also:Mount to Peppergate) and numerous See also:inscriptions remain to indicate its See also:character and See also:area.
