DONAGHADEE , a See also:

market See also:town of Co. Down, See also:Ireland, in the See also:north See also:parliamentary See also:division, near the See also:south of See also:Belfast Lough, on the Irish Channel, 25 M. E. by N. of Belfast by a See also:branch of the Belfast and Co. Down railway. Pop. (1901) 2073. It is the nearest See also:port in Ireland to See also:Great See also:Britain, being 212 m. S.W. of Portpatrick in See also:Wigtownshire. See also:Telegraph and See also:telephone cables join these ports, but a See also:regular passenger route does not exist owing to the unsuitability of Portpatrick. Donaghadee See also:harbour admitsvessels up to 200 tons. On the north-See also:east See also:side of the town there is a See also:rath or encampment 70 ft. high, in which a See also:powder See also:magazine is erected. The See also:parish See also:church See also:dates from 1626.

holy See also:wells in the town. The town is frequented as a seaside watering-See also:place in the summer months.
