DRAMMEN , a seaport of See also:Norway, in Buskerud and Jarlsberg-See also:Laurvik amter (counties), at the See also:head of Drammen See also:Fjord, a western See also:arm of See also:Christiania Fjord, 33 M. by See also:rail S.W. from Christiania. Pop. (19oo) 23,093. Its situation, at the mouth of the broad Drammen See also:river, between lofty hills, is very beautiful. It is the junction of See also:railways from Christiania to Haugsund, See also:Kongsberg and Hi nefos, and to Laurvik and See also:Skien. The See also:town is See also:modern, having suffered from fires in 1866, 187o and 1880. It consists of three parts: Bragernaes on the See also:north, divided by the river from Stri mso and the See also:port, Tangen, on the See also:south. The prosperity of Drammen depends mainly on the See also:timber See also:trade; and saw-milling is an active See also:industry, the logs beingfloated down the river from the upland forests. Timber and See also:wood-pulp are exported (over See also:half of each to See also:Great See also:Britain), with See also:paper, See also:ice and some See also:cobalt and See also:nickel ore. The See also:chief imports are See also:British See also:coal and See also:German machinery. See also:Salmon are taken in the upper reaches of the Drammen.
