EMPOLI , a See also:

town of See also:Tuscany, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Florence, from which it is 20 M. W. by S. by See also:rail. Pop. (1901) .7005 (town); 20,301 (See also:commune). It is situated 89 ft. above See also:sea-level, to the S. of the See also:Arno. The See also:principal See also:church, the Collegiata, or Pieve di S. See also:Andrea, founded in 1093, still preserves the See also:lower See also:part of the See also:original arcaded See also:facade in See also:black, See also:white and coloured See also:marble. The See also:works of See also:art which it once contained are most of them preserved in a See also:gallery See also:close by. Some of the other churches contain interesting works of art. The principal square is surrounded by old houses with arcades. The painter Jacopo Chimenti (Jacopo da Empoli), 1554-1640, was See also:born here. Empoli is on the See also:main railway See also:line from Florence to See also:Pisa, and is the point of divergence of a line to See also:Siena.
