EUTHYDEMUS , a native of See also:

Magnesia, who overturned the See also:dynasty of See also:Diodotus of See also:Bactria, and became See also:king of Bactria about 230 B.C. (Polyb. xi. 34; See also:Strabo xi. 515 wrongly makes him the first king). In 208 he was attacked by See also:Antiochus the See also:Great, whom he tried in vain to resist on the shores of the See also:river See also:Arius, the See also:modern Herirud (Polyb. x. 49). The See also:war lasted three years, and was on the whole fortunate for Antiochus. But he saw that he was not able to subdue Bactria and See also:Sogdiana, and so in 206 concluded a See also:peace with Euthydemus, through the See also:mediation of his son See also:Demetrius, in which he recognized him as king (Polyb. xi. 34). Soon afterwards Demetrius (q.v.) began the See also:conquest of See also:India. There exist many coins of Euthydemus; those on which he is called See also:god are struck by the later king See also:Agathocles. Other coins with the name Euthydemus, which show a youthful See also:face, are presumably those of Euthydemus II., who cannot have ruled See also:long and was probably a son of Demetrius.
