town of See also:Germany, See also:capital of the principality of See also:Lubeck, which is an See also:enclave in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Schleswig--See also:Holstein and belongs to the See also:grand-duchy of See also:Oldenburg, picturesquely situated on the See also:Lake Eutin, 20 m. N. from Lubeck by the railway to See also:Kiel. Pop. (19o5) 5204. It possesses a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and two See also:Protestant churches, a See also:palace with a See also:fine See also:park, and a See also:monument to See also:Weber, the composer, who was 958 See also:born here. Towards the end of the 18th See also:century Eutin acquired some fame as the See also:residence of a See also:group of poets and writers, of whom the best-known were Johann Heinrich See also:Voss, the See also:brothers See also:Stolberg, and See also:Friedrich Heinrich See also:Jacobi. In the neighbourhood is a beautiful See also:tract of See also:country, See also:rich in See also:beech forests and fjords, known as " the Holstein See also:Switzerland," largely frequented in summer by the Hamburgers. Eutin was, according to tradition, founded by See also:Count Adolf II. of Holstein. In 1155 it See also:fell to the bishopric of Lubeck and was often the residence of the prelates of that see. After some vicissitudes of See also:fortune during the See also:middle ages and the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War, it came into the See also:possession of the See also:house of Holstein, and hence to See also:Prussia in 1866.
