After attending (1766–69) the gymnasium at Neubrandenburg, he was obliged to accept a private tutorship in See also:order to See also:earn See also:money to enable him to study at a university. At the invitation of H. C. See also:Bole, whose See also:attention he had attracted by poems contributed to the See also:Gottingen klusenalmanach, he went to Gottingen in 1772. Here he studied See also:philology and became one of the leading See also:spirits in the famous Hain or Dichterbund. In 1775 Buie made over to him the editorship of the Musenalmanach, which he continued to issue for several years. He married See also:Boie's See also:sister Ernestine in 1777 and in 1778 was appointed See also:rector of the school at Otterndorf in See also:Hanover. In 1782 he accepted the rectorship of the gymnasium at See also:Eutin, where he remained until 1802. Retiring in this See also:year with a See also:pension of 600 thalers he settled at See also:Jena, and in 18o5, although See also:Goethe used his utmost endeavours to persuade him to stay, accepted a See also:call to a professorship at See also:Heidelberg. Here, in the enjoyment of a consider-able See also:salary, he devoted himself entirely to his See also:literary labours, See also:September 1851, the son or a See also:country See also:squire. Though intended for the See also:life of a country See also:gentleman, he showed no inclination for outdoor life, and on his return from the See also:war of 1870–71, in which he was wounded, he studied See also:philosophy at Jena and See also:Munich, and then settled at See also:Berchtesgaden. In 1884 Voss was appointed by the See also:grand See also:duke of See also:Weimar librarian of the. See also:Wartburg, but, in consequence of illness. he resigned the See also:post. See also:Chief among his dramas are Serenarola (1878); Magda (18i9); See also:Die Patricierin (188o) ; Der See also:Mohr See also:des Zaren (1883),; Unehrlich See also:Volk (1885) ; Alexandra (1888) ; Eva (1889) ; Wehe See also:don Besiegten (1889) ; The neue Zed (1891); Schuldig (1892).
