GAZETTE , a name given to See also:news-sheets or See also:newspapers having an abstract of current events (see NEWSPAPERS). The See also:London Gazette is the See also:title of the See also:English See also:official See also:organ for announcements by the See also:government, and is published every Tuesday and See also:Friday. It contains all proclamations, orders of See also:council, promotions and appointments to commissions in the See also:army and See also:navy, all appointments to offices of See also:state, and such other orders, rules and regulations as are directed by See also:act of See also:parliament to be published therein. It also contains notices of proceedings in See also:bankruptcy, dissolutions of See also:partnership, &c. By the Documentary See also:Evidence Act 1868 the See also:production of a copy of the Gazette is prima facie evidence of royal proclamations and government orders and regulations. Similar gazettes are also published in See also:Edinburgh and See also:Dublin. Most countries (the See also:United States excepted) have official See also:journals containing See also:information more or less similar to that of the London Gazette, as the See also:French See also:Journal gfciel, the See also:German Deutscher Reichs-und Kgl. Preuss. Staats-Anzeiger, &c. The word" gazetteer " was originally applied to one who wrote for " gazettes," but is now only used for a See also:geographical See also:dictionary arranged on an alphabetical See also:plan.
