GELDERN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in Rhenish See also:Prussia, on the Niers, 28 m. N. W. of See also:Dusseldorf, at the junction of See also:railways to See also:Wesel and See also:Cologne. Pop. (19o5) 6551. It has an Evangelical and two See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches and a town See also:hall with a See also:fine See also:council chamber. Its See also:industries include the manufacture of buttons, shoes, cigars and See also:soap. The town See also:dates from about 11oo and was See also:early an important fortified See also:place; until 1371 it was the See also:residence of the See also:counts and See also:dukes of See also:Gelderland. Having passed to See also:Spain, its fortifications were strengthened by See also:Philip II., but they were razed by See also:Frederick the See also:Great, the town having been in the See also:possession of Prussia since 1703.
