GORINCHEM, or GORCUM , a fortified See also:town of See also:Holland in the See also:province of See also:south Holland, on the right See also:bank of the Merwede at the confluence of the Linge, 16 m. by See also:rail W. of See also:Dordrecht. It is connected by the Zederik and Merwede canals with Amster-See also:dam, and steamers ply hence in every direction. Pop. (1900) 11,987. Gorinchem possesses several interesting old houses, and overlooking the See also:river are some fortified gateways of the 17th See also:century. The See also:principal buildings are the old See also:church of St See also:Vincent, containing the monuments of the lords of Arkel; the town See also:hall, a See also:prison, See also:custom-See also:house, See also:barracks and a military See also:hospital. The charitable and benevolent institutions are numerous, and there are also a library and several learned associations. Gorinchem possesses a See also:good See also:harbour, and besides working in See also:gold and See also:silver, carries on a considerable See also:trade in See also:grain, See also:hemp, See also:cheese, potatoes, See also:cattle and See also:fish, the See also:salmon See also:fishery being noted. Woerkum, or Woudrichem, a little below the town on the See also:left bank of the Merwede, is famous for its See also:quaint old buildings, which are decorated with mosaics.
