GRAN SASSO D'ITALIA (" See also:

Great See also:Rock of See also:Italy "), a See also:mountain of the Abruzzi, Italy, the culminating point of the See also:Apennines, 9560 ft. in height. In formation it resembles the See also:limestone See also:Alps of See also:Tirol and there are on its elevated plateaus a number of doline or See also:funnel-shaped depressions into which the melted See also:snow and the See also:rain sink. The See also:summit is covered with snow for the greater See also:part of the See also:year. Seen from the Adriatic, See also:Monte Corno, as it is sometimes called, from its resemblance to a See also:horn, affords a magnificent spectacle ; the Alpine region beneath its summit is still the See also:home of the See also:wild See also:boar, and here and there are dense See also:woods of See also:beech and See also:pine. The See also:group has numerous other lofty peaks, of which the See also:chief are the See also:Pizzo d Intermesole (868o ft.), the Corno See also:Piccolo (865o ft.), the Pizzo Cefalone (8307 ft.) and the Monte della Portella (7835 ft.). The most convenient starting-point for the ascent is Assergi, to m. N.E. of See also:Aquila, at the S. See also:foot of the Gran Sasso. The See also:Italian Alpine See also:Club has erected a hut S.V. of the See also:principal summit, and has published a See also:special guidebook (E. Abbate, Guida al Gran. Sasso d' Italia, See also:Rome, 1888). The view from the summit extends to the Tyrrhenian See also:Sea on the See also:west and the mountains of See also:Dalmatia on the See also:east in clear See also:weather. The ascent was first made in 1794 by See also:Orazio See also:Delfico from the See also:Teramo See also:side.

In Assergi is the interesting See also:

church of Sta. Maria Assunta, dating from 1150, with later alterations (see Gavini, in L'Arte, 1901, 316, 391).
