ORAZIO (c. 1565—1646) is generally named Orazio Lomi de' See also:Gentileschi; it appears that De' Gentileschi was his correct surname, Lomi being the surname which his See also:mother had See also:borne during her first See also:marriage. He was See also:born at See also:Pisa, and studied under his See also:half-See also:brother Aurelio Lomi, whom in course of See also:time he surpassed. He afterwards went to See also:Rome, and was associated with the landscape-painter See also:Agostino Tasi, executing the figures for the landscape backgrounds of this artist in the Palazzo Rospigliosi, and it is said in the See also:great See also:hall of the Quirinal See also:Palace, although by some authorities the figures in the last-named See also:building are ascribed to Lanfranco. His best See also:works are " See also:Saints See also:Cecilia and See also:Valerian," in the Palazzo See also:Borghese, Rome; " See also:David after the See also:death of See also:Goliath," in the Palazzo See also:Doria, See also:Genoa; and some works in the royal palace, See also:Turin, noticeable for vivid and uncommon colouring. At an advanced See also:age Gentileschi went to See also:England at the invitation of See also:Charles I., and he was employed in the palace at See also:Greenwich. Vandyck included him in his portraits of a See also:hundred illustrious men. His works generally are strong in See also:shadow and See also:positive in See also:colour. He died in England in 1646.
