S.W. of See also:Vilna on the See also:main See also:line to St See also:Petersburg. Pop. (1901.) 41,736, nearly two-thirds See also:Jews. It is an episcopal see of the Orthodox See also:Greek See also:church and the headquarters of the II. See also:Army See also:Corps. It has two old castles, now converted to other uses, and two churches (16th and 17th centuries). See also:Tobacco. factories and distilleries are important; machinery, See also:soap, candles, vehicles and firearms are also made. Built in the 12th See also:century, Grodno was almost entirely destroyed by the See also:Mongols (1241) and See also:Teutonic knights (1284 and 1391). See also:Stephen See also:Bathory, See also:king of See also:Poland, made it his capital, and died there in 1586. The See also:Polish Estates frequentlymet at Grodno after 1673, and there in 1793 they signed the second See also:partition of Poland. It was at Grodno that See also:Stanislaus See also:Poniatowski resigned the Polish See also:crown in 1795.
