GUANTANAMO , the easternmost important See also:town of the S. See also:coast of See also:Cuba, in the See also:province of See also:Santiago, about 40 M. E. of Santiago. Pop. (1907) 14,559. It is situated by the Guazo (or Guaso) See also:river, on a little open See also:plain between the mountains. The beautiful, See also:land-locked See also:harbour, Io m. See also:long from N. to S. and 4 M. wide in places, has an See also:outer and an inner See also:basin. The latter has a very narrow entrance, and 2 to 2.5 fathoms See also:depth of See also:water. From the See also:port of Caimanera to the See also:city of Guantanamo, 13 m. N., there is a railway, and the city has railway connexion with Santiago. Guantanamo is one of the two ports leased by Cuba to the See also:United States for a See also:naval station. It is the See also:shipping-port,and centre of a surrounding See also:coffee-, See also:sugar- and See also:lime-growing See also:district. In 1741 an See also:English force under See also:Admiral See also:Edward See also:Vernon and See also:General See also: They named the harbour See also:Cumberland See also:bay. After their See also:retreat fortifications were begun.
