King's See also:College, See also:Cambridge, and in 1814 was appointed assistant. See also:master at Eton under Dr See also:Keate. In 1834 he became headmaster of the college, and his See also:administration was a vigorous one. New buildings were erected, including the school library and the See also:sanatorium, the college See also:chapel was restored, the Old See also:Christopher See also:Inn was closed, and the See also:custom of " Montem," the collection by See also:street begging of funds for the university expenses of the See also:captain of the school, was suppressed. He is supposed to have suggested the See also:prince See also:consort's See also:modern See also:language prizes, while the See also:prize for English See also:essay he founded himself. In 1852 he became See also:provost of Eton, and in 1854 vicar of Mapledurham. He died on the 27th of See also:January 1862. and was buried in the Eton College chapel. On See also:account of his command of See also:languages See also:ancient and modern, he was known in See also:London as " the English See also:Mezzofanti," and he was a See also:book See also:collector of the finest See also:taste. Among his own books are some excellent See also:translations from the English into See also:Italian, See also:German and See also:Greek. He had a considerable reputation as a writer of English hexameters and as a See also:judge of Homeric See also:translation.
